The Roman conquest and rule was in 63 BCE. Pompey conquered Jerusalem for Rome and annexed Jerusalem. Pompey sacrificed a pig in the temple. After Pompey Herod the Great ruled. He kicked the parathions out of Rome and went to Rome wants the emperor to call him king. The emperor names him king and now Herod takes control of the Galilee in 39 BCE. He then takes Jerusalem in 37 BCE. There are coins of Herod the Great. There are no faces on the coins because people he are ruling are Jewish. He was sensitive to the Jews but wants to get favor from the Romans. He had knowledge of the Jewish traditions which helped him in ruling over the Jewish people. Herod expanded the 2nd temple, which some people refer to as the 3rd temple. Herod builds a retaining wall around Jerusalem, which is now the western wall. The western wall is the holiest place in all of Judaism. Herod built the Herodian palace and theater which has roman architecture. He also expanded the siloam pool. He built the Antonia fortress with the Romans, which allowed the Romans to keep watch over the city and the Jewish people.
I was interested to see the many different architectures that Herod built and how people consider the expansion of the 2nd temple by Herod to be more lavish than the 2nd temple.
